Advocacy
The BVCA monitors, communicates, coordinates, and informs for and within the neighborhood.
Details
The BVCA maintains open communication networks with government officials, businesses, and other groups. We do that by making them partners in our neighborhood, all working towards a strong neighborhood. We also communicate, coordinate and share best practices with other neighborhood associations.
The BVCA works to stay on top of issues that affect the neighborhood and keep members informed via this website, email, Nextdoor and Blossomwoodites. This allows everyone to make informed decisions.
Example
In January 2021, Huntsville City Schools, the State Board of Education’s local agency, optioned the Clements Church property (formerly Mountain View Baptist) as the new location for its central office. Because of State privacy procedures, the public announcement of this caught us all by surprise. The BVCA board was concerned about the impact of having a large business office in our residential neighborhood, so BVCA board members met with the school board leaders, to understand what was intended.
We then conducted a survey of the neighborhood, via Nextdoor, and found the vast majority disliked that proposed use of the property. We had further meetings with the school leaders, plus with city officials, about the situation. Ultimately, the city made an alternative site for the schools’ office available and Cornerstone Presbyterian Church purchased the property.
We believe that the BVCA’s advocacy in this issue helped bring about that satisfactory result.
